A tragic incident in Cebu City has led to the confirmed deaths of four individuals following a significant landfill collapse. Rescue teams continue their efforts to locate dozens of missing workers amidst perilous conditions.
The disaster struck Thursday at the Binaliw landfill, when a massive heap of waste unexpectedly collapsed. Approximately 110 workers were on-site at the time, and many buildings within the facility crumbled under the weight of the debris.
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival announced on Saturday that among the deceased, four workers have been identified, with at least 12 others sustaining injuries and receiving medical care at nearby hospitals. Current reports indicate 36 individuals remain missing, although authorities are still in the process of verifying this information.
Families of those unaccounted for have congregated at the site, clinging to the hope of reuniting with their loved ones. One woman shared her desperate search for her husband, revealing that she had not received any updates since the incident but continues to hold onto hope.
Rescue efforts are complicated by the unstable nature of the debris, alongside twisted metal and highly flammable waste. Emergency responders, including police and fire department units, navigate the hazardous site meticulously. Authorities noted that signs of life have been detected in certain sections, leading to the deployment of a 50-ton crane to aid the search, escorted by police.
Safety precautions have been heightened around the collapse zone due to the evident dangers to rescuers. Access is restricted to mitigate further risks linked to hazardous gases and unstable refuse.
The victims identified so far include an engineer and a female office worker, both employees at the landfill facility. Investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of this catastrophic collapse, with a survivor recounting that the disaster occurred suddenly despite clear weather conditions.
As time presses on, hopes persist that more survivors might still be rescued from the wreckage.
