RCMP Investigating Fatal Dog Attack That Killed Nova Scotia Boy

The RCMP in Nova Scotia say their investigation is ongoing into a fatal dog attack that claimed the life of 13-year-old Drew Nickerson near Shelburne, N.S. Drew died on Monday after being airlifted to a Halifax hospital following the attack, which occurred late Saturday afternoon.

According to police, the incident happened on Upper Sandy Cove Road in the rural community of Welshtown, about 12 kilometres north of Shelburne. Drew was riding his bicycle past a nearby property when three large-breed dogs — identified as a Rottweiler and two Cane Corsos — ran onto the road and attacked him.

Staff Sgt. Mark MacPherson of the Nova Scotia RCMP said investigators have obtained video footage of the attack from a neighbouring residence and are working to understand the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Police are also conducting door-to-door canvassing, interviewing residents and reviewing the dogs’ day-to-day movements.

MacPherson confirmed that the dogs were not confined to their owner’s property at the time of the attack. One of the dog owners drove Drew to hospital due to the severity of his injuries. Police said there had been no previous complaints about the dogs to RCMP or local animal control authorities, and it is too early to determine whether criminal charges will be laid.

The dog owners have been cooperative with investigators, RCMP said. The three dogs involved in the attack were later euthanized by a veterinarian as part of the investigation process.

The tragedy has deeply affected Shelburne County, a close-knit region with a population of about 13,000 people. Drew was a Grade 8 student at Shelburne Regional High School and was described as kind, energetic and deeply connected to outdoor life.

Community members have rallied to support the family. Local fisherman Conway Hutt organized a fundraising raffle, with prizes donated by fishermen and residents, including lobster, scallops, gift cards and handmade items. The response has been widespread, with donations coming in from across Canada.

In addition, an online fundraising campaign for Drew’s mother had raised nearly $50,000 by Wednesday, with hundreds of people contributing. Drew’s family released a statement thanking the community for its overwhelming support and confirmed that his grandparents will cover funeral expenses.

Tributes have also poured in from Drew’s soccer team, Southwest Blast FC, which remembered him for his bright smile, sense of humour and love for the game. Police say the investigation remains active as they continue gathering evidence and reviewing all aspects of the case.
