Turkey Set to Integrate into Saudi-Pakistan Security Alliance Mirroring NATO

Post by : Mina Carter

Turkey is currently in talks to join a security alliance between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan that is reminiscent of NATO’s collective defense framework. This upcoming pact features a provision analogous to NATO’s Article 5, which stipulates that an assault on one member equates to an assault on all.

Initially a bilateral agreement between Riyadh and Islamabad, the partnership has gained traction with the potential inclusion of Turkey. Financial backing is anticipated from Saudi Arabia, while Pakistan is set to contribute its nuclear capabilities, missile systems, and military personnel. In turn, Turkey will supply military expertise and bolster the domestic defense sector, as per insights from a strategist based in Ankara.

As the U.S. shifts its focus toward protecting its own interests and those of Israel in the region, nations like Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan are solidifying new partnerships to delineate allies and adversaries.

Analysts indicate that Turkey’s rising strategic stakes in South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa harmonize closely with the objectives of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, making this expanded alliance a logical development.

Recently, representatives from all three nations convened for their inaugural joint naval discussions held in Ankara.

Turkey’s involvement carries substantial significance as it is a principal NATO member, boasting the alliance's second-largest military force after the United States.

Saudi Arabia and Turkey share mutual apprehensions concerning Shiite-majority Iran but prefer diplomatic engagement over military confrontation. Both countries are also in favor of a Sunni-led stable Syria and advancing Palestinian statehood.

Turkey and Pakistan already maintain robust defense partnerships, including the construction of warships for Pakistan’s navy, the modernization of F-16 jets, and the sharing of drone technology with both nations. Moreover, Turkey has extended invitations for cooperation on its fifth-generation fighter jet program.

These trilateral defense discussions follow a recent ceasefire that brought an end to a brief military encounter between India and Pakistan, during which Turkey demonstrated visible support for Pakistan.
