Canada Welcomes Students After UK Study Visa Ban

Post by : Raina Carter

Canada is positioning itself as an attractive study destination for international students after the United Kingdom announced a new restriction on issuing study visas to nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan, set to take effect later this month.

The UK government’s “visa brake” policy will halt new student visa applications from outside the UK for those four nationalities starting March 26, 2026, citing concerns about a rise in asylum claims after students arrive.

In contrast, Canada continues to welcome eligible applicants from all countries, offering a clear process to obtain study permits and outlining pathways that extend beyond graduation toward permanent residency — a significant advantage for students who seek long-term settlement.

To study in Canada, applicants must first enroll in a designated learning institution (DLI) and obtain a Letter of Acceptance (LOA). They also need to demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover tuition and living expenses, provide identity documents, and submit a complete study permit application with required forms and biometrics.

Once in Canada, international graduates may qualify for a post‑graduation work permit (PGWP), allowing them to gain valuable Canadian work experience — often a key step toward Canadian permanent residency through Express Entry.

Canada’s student visa system remains open to applicants from all regions, offering comparatively faster pathways to work authorization and settlement than many competitors. Recent trends show the country planning to issue hundreds of thousands of study permits in 2026, aiming to balance quality international education with economic and community needs.

This development arrives amid broader shifts in global education migration: while the UK tightens visa rules for specific nationalities, Canada signals stability and opportunity for students worldwide. — Reporting from Ottawa and London.
