Turkey has urged the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by Kurdish factions, to settle their disputes through dialogue and negotiation, emphasizing that the patience of regional stakeholders is running out. The call for peace was reiterated by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who highlighted Ankara's preference for a diplomatic approach but warned that it cannot wait indefinitely.
In a recent interview, Fidan expressed Turkey's desire to avoid military engagements with the SDF, advocating instead for prioritizing discussions and nonviolent resolutions. However, he cautioned that persistent delays in implementing a pivotal agreement could lead to a precarious situation.
The crux of the matter revolves around an integration pact signed on March 10, which Turkey asserts outlines how the SDF should mesh with a larger political and security framework in Syria. Fidan stated that all involved parties expect the SDF to honor and enact this agreement promptly and without modifications.
“Everyone anticipates the terms of the agreement to be fulfilled as originally signed,” Fidan remarked. He added that any alterations or postponements of the arrangement could result in severe repercussions, a scenario Turkey aims to prevent.
Turkey has historically viewed the SDF with skepticism, citing its connections to Kurdish militants that Ankara deems a security risk. Previously, Turkey has executed military campaigns in northern Syria to counter Kurdish-led forces along its border.
Fidan’s remarks indicate that while Turkey seeks to avert further conflict, it is also issuing a firm warning. He noted that the patience of all parties is “running thin,” signaling that diplomatic endeavors must yield results soon.
The foreign minister reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to regional stability, insisting that peace is achievable through dialogue and negotiation rather than through military means. However, he stressed that now the onus lies with the SDF to fulfill its obligations.
