A huge explosion in Tehran shocked people on Friday during a pro-government rally held for Quds Day. The blast happened near Ferdowsi Square, close to Enghelab Street, where the main demonstrations were taking place.
After the explosion, thick gray smoke was seen rising in the air. People at the rally were shouting slogans such as “Death to Israel!” and “Death to America!” during the event.
The cause of the Tehran explosion is not clear yet.
One day before the blast, Israel had issued a warning on its Farsi-language social media account. It said it would carry out operations in the area later in the day. The message also warned people that being in the area could put their lives at risk. However, it is not known how many people in Tehran were able to see this warning because internet access in the country is widely restricted.
The explosion happened while large crowds gathered for Quds Day, an annual event held on the last Friday of Ramadan. The day was started in 1979 by Iran’s first Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. It is meant to show support for Palestinians and oppose Israel and Zionism.
A day before the rally, Iran’s Supreme Leader called for a strong public turnout. He said the event should show unity and resistance. He encouraged people to attend the Quds Day rallies in large numbers.
The United States President also made strong comments on Friday, speaking about the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. He claimed that Iran’s military power had been weakened and made strong statements about the situation.
At this time, officials have not confirmed what caused the blast in Tehran. Investigations are expected to continue.
