Hong Kong, Nov 27, 2025: A devastating fire at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex in the Tai Po district has claimed the lives of at least 44 individuals, spotlighting the inherent dangers associated with bamboo scaffolding. Flames rapidly consumed the bamboo poles and protective green mesh, leading to portions of the building collapsing.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, but it spread swiftly due to the bamboo scaffolding employed during construction. Bamboo has been a favored choice for scaffolding in Hong Kong and China for generations, prized for its adaptability, availability, and affordability. Despite the prevalence of modern buildings, approximately 2,500 bamboo scaffolding professionals maintain their craft in the city, even as metal alternatives gain popularity.
As flames surged, witnesses heard gunfire in the vicinity of the site, while the green protective mesh ignited, adding to the chaos. In response, the Hong Kong government has established a task force to probe the incident, assessing whether the building and its scaffolding complied with fire safety regulations.
John Lee, Hong Kong's leader, assured that officials would be held accountable and that safety protocols would undergo a thorough reevaluation. Labour Secretary Chris Sun indicated that bamboo scaffolding will not face an outright ban, yet stricter standards for fire-retardant materials are on the way.
The city has witnessed numerous incidents over recent years related to bamboo scaffolding, including fires at Chinachem Tower and other multi-family units. Experts continue to voice concerns regarding the flammability of materials in use, raising alarm over the safety of both construction workers and residents.
The Hong Kong Labour Department has released new guidelines mandating that scaffolding nets and other protective gear comply with established fire-retardant standards. Advocacy groups have consistently stressed the need for stringent safety checks on construction sites to mitigate risks.
As the community mourns those lost, officials are anticipated to reinforce safety standards and reconsider the application of bamboo scaffolding in both residential and public construction ventures.
