After years of discussions, electric car company Tesla, led by Elon Musk, is officially launching in India. The American automaker will open its first showroom in India, known as a Tesla Experience Centre, on July 15 in Mumbai.
This showroom will be located in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), one of Mumbai’s most modern and important commercial districts. With this move, Tesla is taking its first real step into India — the world’s third-largest car market, after China and the United States.
What Is the Tesla Experience Centre?
The Tesla Experience Centre is not just a showroom. It is a place where people can:
See Tesla cars up close
Learn about electric vehicles (EVs)
Ask questions about features, prices, and bookings
Explore Tesla's technology like autopilot and supercharging
While the showroom is opening, car deliveries will take time, as Tesla has only imported a small number of cars so far.
What Has Tesla Brought into India So Far?
Between January and June 2025, Tesla imported goods worth around $1 million into India. These items were mainly brought in from China and the United States, and include:
Six Model Y electric cars
Five cars priced at around $32,500 each
One long-range version priced at $46,000
Superchargers (used for fast charging Tesla cars)
Car chargers and accessories
These imports are meant for display and demo purposes. At this time, Tesla has not started customer deliveries or bookings.
Tesla Faces Big Challenges in India
Even though Tesla is finally entering the Indian market, it is not an easy journey. The biggest issue Tesla faces is India’s high import taxes. The Indian government currently charges:
About 70% import duty on electric cars
Additional local taxes and levies
This means that a Tesla car, which costs around ₹30-40 lakh in the U.S., could cost ₹60-80 lakh or more in India, depending on the model.
Due to this, Tesla has decided not to manufacture cars in India — at least not for now.
What Is the Indian Government’s Role?
For years, the Indian government has been trying to bring Tesla into the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has met Elon Musk and offered:
Policy support for EV makers
Land and subsidies for building factories
Special incentives for local manufacturing
In fact, in 2023, Elon Musk was expected to visit India to announce a $2–$3 billion investment, including setting up a local factory. But he cancelled his trip at the last moment.
Tesla has now told the Indian government that it wants to test the market first by selling imported cars, before making any final decisions about building in India.
What Is Tesla Doing in India Now?
While Tesla is not manufacturing yet, it is building its team and preparing for business. The company has:
Hired people for store management, sales, and car servicing
Listed job openings for supply chain engineers and vehicle operators (possibly for testing its autopilot feature)
Started scouting locations for other showrooms in major cities like Delhi and Bengaluru
This shows that Tesla is taking slow but serious steps toward becoming part of the Indian electric vehicle market.
What Does Elon Musk Think About This Market?
Elon Musk has often shown interest in India but also raised concerns. He believes that high taxes make it difficult for Tesla to sell cars at a good price in India.
He has also said that Tesla would only consider local manufacturing if the government lowers the taxes on imported electric vehicles. So far, India has not agreed to that condition fully.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump also commented in the past, saying that if Tesla built cars in India just to avoid U.S. taxes, it would be “unfair to America.”
This shows how Tesla’s business decisions in India are being closely watched not just by Indians, but also by leaders and investors in the U.S.
Why India Matters to Tesla
India is becoming a very important market for electric vehicles. Reasons include:
Rising fuel prices
Growing awareness about air pollution
Government plans to reduce fossil fuel use
A large middle-class population that wants smart, modern vehicles
While other car companies like Tata, Hyundai, and MG have already launched EVs in India, Tesla brings global brand value and advanced technology that many customers are excited about.
What to Expect Next?
Official launch event of the Mumbai showroom on July 15
Possibility of Tesla opening more showrooms in other major Indian cities
Growing interest from Indian buyers and fans of electric vehicles
Government and company talks may continue about local manufacturing
However, for now, Tesla’s cars may remain expensive and limited in number in India due to import taxes and low stock.
The launch of Tesla’s first showroom in India is a big moment for both the company and the Indian auto market. While Tesla’s arrival comes with high expectations, many challenges remain, especially regarding pricing, import taxes, and the company’s decision not to build cars locally.
Still, this marks the beginning of Tesla’s journey in a country where demand for electric vehicles is set to rise sharply. As Indian consumers explore greener and smarter mobility, Tesla’s presence — even if limited for now — could play an important role in shaping the future of EVs in India.
