Prada's ₹69,000 Brooch: A Fashion Statement or Outrage?

Post by : Bianca Hayes

Luxury brand Prada has stirred significant attention, not due to its glamorous runway events, but through the launch of a surprisingly simple yet costly accessory—a safety pin brooch, priced at ₹69,000 ($775).

Officially titled the "Crochet Safety Pin Brooch," the item is adorned with lively crochet thread and showcases Prada’s distinctive triangle logo charm. Crafted from brass and cotton, it measures approximately 3.15 inches and comes in three striking color pairs: blue and brown, baby pink with pistachio green, and orange with brown, perfectly suited for autumn.

The dramatic difference between the luxury price tag and the typical price of an everyday safety pin—often around ₹10 for a pack—has left many in shock. Social media users were quick to express their thoughts; one remarked, “We would make something like this in our needlework class at school!!” Another added, “I could easily create this with any color and even accessorize with a gold charm for the safety pin hole.” The disparity in affordability prompted further comments, with one saying, “I could fill my entire closet with ₹70,000,” while others shared stories of purchasing similar pins locally for just a few rupees.

This isn’t Prada’s first encounter with controversial pricing. Previously, the brand introduced Kolhapuri-style chappals priced at ₹1.2 lakh, facing backlash for failing to credit the traditional Indian artisans involved in the design. This controversy escalated to the point that a public interest litigation (PIL) was lodged in the Bombay High Court, seeking reparations for alleged design appropriation.

The event surrounding the safety pin brooch illustrates a key tension in the luxury fashion world, where everyday items are sold at exorbitant prices to create an aura of exclusivity and prestige. While some view this as a bold assertion of brand value, many see it as a manifestation of unwarranted opulence.
