Anthony Black delivered a brilliant performance, scoring a career-high 31 points to guide the Orlando Magic to a decisive 144-103 win against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday in an NBA Cup matchup. Black's energy was evident as he netted 27 points in the first half alone, achieving an impressive 20 points during the second quarter. His remarkable efforts allowed Orlando to set franchise milestones, with 51 points in a single quarter and 86 points in the first half.
Even without their star player Paolo Banchero, who is recovering from a groin injury, the Magic displayed strength and camaraderie. Nine players reached double digits, with Franz Wagner scoring 21 and Desmond Bane contributing 15. The bench stood out, collectively scoring 82 points—the highest for any team in the league this season. Black and Jett Howard were key players off the bench, with Howard adding 13 more points.
The 76ers were unable to keep pace, missing key players Joel Embiid, Paul George, and VJ Edgecombe. Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 20 points, while Jared McCain posted 15. After a tight first quarter that finished 35-35, Orlando took control in the second.
In a rapid span of less than four minutes, the Magic surged to a double-digit lead, with Black contributing seven points during that critical period, capped by a key 3-pointer making it 49-39. Jalen Suggs aided Black with an alley-oop from beyond half court, leading to two more 3-pointers, also assisted by Suggs, as Orlando established a solid 57-43 lead. By halftime, the Magic had surged ahead to 86-60 following a 9-0 run led by Wagner and Howard.
Early in the third quarter, a finger roll by Black pushed the lead past 30 points. Orlando then outpaced the 76ers with a 17-0 run, including a 3-pointer from Tristan da Silva that stretched the score to 111-69. The team showcased strong shooting, teamwork, and defense, maintaining their lead throughout the quarter.
The Magic continued to dominate in the fourth, at one point leading by as much as 46 points. Although Black's individual performance was a highlight, the entire team's effort, effective bench scoring, and solid defense paved the way for this definitive victory.
A scuffle late in the second quarter resulted in six technical fouls, with Suggs receiving a double-technical and being ejected. Despite his early exit, Suggs managed a career-high 11 assists in just 16 minutes, significantly impacting Orlando’s record-setting first half.
The Magic’s Black showcased his exceptional scoring abilities, while his team exhibited depth, collaboration, and strategic play. The absence of Philadelphia's star players contributed to the lopsided score. Orlando's record-breaking quarter and first half set a commanding tone for their continued success this season.
