Nova Scotia Youth Seriously Injured in Dog Attack While Cycling

Police in Nova Scotia reported that a youth sustained life-threatening injuries after being attacked by three large-breed dogs on Saturday evening in the rural community of Welshtown.

According to Shelburne District RCMP, first responders were dispatched shortly after 5 p.m. to the 100 block of Upper Sandy Cove Road following reports of a serious dog attack. Upon arrival, officers learned that the youth had been riding a bicycle past a private property when the three dogs suddenly left the property and attacked.

Due to the severity of the injuries, emergency officials requested an air ambulance. The victim was transported by LifeFlight helicopter to a hospital in Halifax for immediate and specialized medical care. Police confirmed that the injuries were considered life-threatening at the time the youth was airlifted.

RCMP said the dogs involved in the incident were later euthanized by a veterinarian to ensure public safety. Authorities have not disclosed the specific breeds of the dogs, the age of the victim, or the identity of the property owner.

Police noted that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack is ongoing. At this time, no additional information is being released as the matter remains under review.
