Holocaust Survivor's Daughter Reacts to Sydney's Tragic Shooting Incident

In Australia, antisemitism has surged alarmingly since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, leaving the Jewish community in distress. The violence stemmed from an attack by Palestinian militant group Hamas that resulted in the death of 1,200 Israelis on October 7, 2023, leading to Israel's retaliatory bombings of Gaza, which have reportedly claimed over 70,000 lives as per local health authorities. This wave of antisemitic incidents has been notably tied to increased animosity toward Jewish Australians.

Victoria Teplitsky, 53, a retired childcare centre owner and the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, expressed profound anger regarding the Australian government's response to the escalating antisemitism. In light of the recent Bondi Beach shooting, where a father and son attacked with gunfire for approximately 10 minutes, resulting in 15 fatalities, Teplitsky emphasized that the hatred towards Jews is a more pressing issue than gun accessibility. She conveyed that the perpetrators “had been nurtured in hate,” illustrating how systemic antisemitism pervades Australia, transcending the realm of firearms regulation.

The assailants targeted a Jewish festival, which led to panic among the attendees who scrambled for safety before law enforcement intervened. Teplitsky criticized the government for its insufficient action to safeguard Jewish Australians, asserting that the community feels neglected and vulnerable in a nation they thought would protect them from hatred. She recounted the ordeal of her father, Semyon, 86, who sustained grave injuries during the shooting and is currently facing multiple surgeries, with the risk of losing his leg looming large.

The notable rise in antisemitic incidents over the last sixteen months forced the head of Australia’s top intelligence agency to designate antisemitism as the foremost domestic threat. Teplitsky noted various attacks on synagogues, referencing a 2024 arson incident in Melbourne that, while not fatal, sent a stark warning to the community.

Internationally, the situation has drawn attention, as Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admonished Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for not acting firmly against antisemitism. Albanese, in turn, reiterated Australia’s dedication to a two-state solution and highlighted governmental measures such as criminalizing hate speech, banning Nazi salutes, and boosting security funding for Jewish organizations.

Pro-Palestinian protests have surged in Australia since the onset of Israel's offensive; however, Teplitsky highlighted a significant failure in addressing antisemitic hatred, warning of far-reaching implications. She urged the government to act with urgency to protect Jewish Australians and swiftly counteract hatred, discrimination, and violence against the community. The Bondi Beach shooting has reignited critical discussions around antisemitism, public security, and governmental duties in safeguarding minority populations.

This alarming increase in antisemitic incidents underscores an urgent need for stronger protections and awareness. Experts caution that without prompt and decisive action, the Jewish community remains endangered as society grapples with the pervasive rise of hatred and intolerance.
