On the evening of Monday, June 30, 2025, around 7:05 p.m., a serious incident occurred at a fireworks container store in a plaza near Ottawa Street South and Fischer–Hallman Road in Kitchener. A group of teenage boys is suspected of entering the store, taking fireworks, and confronting an employee before fleeing the scene.

 What Happened

According to the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS), several teenage males entered a container-style booth that sells fireworks. They stole an unknown amount of fireworks and when a staff member tried to stop them, a disturbance occurred. Although no serious injuries were reported, the employee was assaulted during the struggle.

The store’s operator, Sim Sahota, shared more details:

“They wrestled us off and they ran away,”

He also noted that a Good Samaritan shopper, who happened to be at a nearby Walmart, intervened, helping employees recover most of the fireworks before the group escaped.

 Police Action & Investigation

Police arrived promptly and confirmed the situation. Following initial investigation:

  • Store employees and witnesses were interviewed.

  • The stolen fireworks were mostly recovered.

  • The suspects were last seen fleeing the plaza in a vehicle.

On July 1, a 17-year-old youth from Kitchener was arrested and has been charged with attempted theft under $5,000. Other suspects remain at large and the investigation is active.

WRPS is urging anyone with video footage or information about the incident to call 519‑570‑9777 ext. 4497, or share tips anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 1‑800‑222‑8477.

 Why This Matters

  1. Community Safety

    • A stolen dangerous item like fireworks poses risks, especially when the public intervenes during a robbery.

  2. Youth Crime & Prevention

    • Teenage involvement in such incidents raises concerns about guiding young people away from criminal activity and toward better choices.

  3. Citizen Courage

    • The helpful stranger who stepped in shows how one person can make a big difference in protecting community and justice.

  4. Law Enforcement in Action

    • Police responding swiftly, interviewing witnesses, and making arrests highlights their commitment to keeping neighborhoods safe.

What Happens Next

  • Investigators are still searching for the remaining suspects.

  • Court proceedings for the arrested youth will address the theft charge.

  • WRPS will review security measures with local fireworks retailers.

  • Community awareness efforts are encouraged—any citizen with information or footage should reach out.

Police remind residents to call for help and not to confront suspects themselves. “Stay safe, let us handle it,” said WRPS.
