In a startling turn of events, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has detained senior police officer Harcharan Singh Bhullar, currently serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Ropar Range, amid serious bribery allegations. The officer, part of the 2009 IPS batch, was arrested at his Chandigarh office as part of an operation triggered by a complaint regarding his demands for monetary inducements. Along with him, a private individual, believed to be an intermediary, was also taken into custody.

The investigation unfolded when a whistleblower approached the CBI, alleging that Bhullar sought bribes through a middleman to influence the handling of a case against him. Prompt action by the CBI led to a successful operation that caught the DIG in the act of receiving the bribe. This arrest marks a significant chapter in the CBI's ongoing efforts to combat corruption, particularly among high-ranking officials in the police force.

Subsequent to Bhullar's arrest, the CBI conducted extensive searches across multiple properties tied to him in Punjab and Chandigarh. During these investigations, they recovered over ₹5 crore in cash, along with 1.5 kilograms of gold jewelry, documentation related to real estate, luxury items, arms, and ammunition. Officials have categorized the discoveries as both substantial and indicative of deeper issues related to corruption.

CBI sources indicate that the vast array of assets unearthed has raised alarms regarding Bhullar’s financial integrity and his potential abuse of authority. Evidence points to ownership of several high-value properties, and the investigation is poised to expand as the agency tracks the financial avenues and potential accomplices involved in this corruption scheme.

This bribery scandal has sent ripples of concern through the law enforcement community, branding it a serious blemish on the ethos of the police force. Senior officials have reassured the public that the CBI will handle this case with the utmost transparency and hold those accountable involved in any wrongdoing. The situation underscores the agency's unwavering resolve in confronting corruption at any level.

Currently, Bhullar is under CBI custody, and further inquiries are proceeding to fully illuminate the scope of his alleged corruption. The national spotlight remains fixed on this case, with expectations of more arrests as investigations reveal one of Punjab's most striking bribery scandals.
