Canada Population Drops by Over 100,000 in Late 2025 Months

Canada’s population has dropped by more than 100,000 people in the last three months of 2025, according to early data shared by Statistics Canada. The report shows that while the country saw some growth earlier in the year, it was not enough to balance the big drop in the final months.

From January to June 2025, Canada added over 77,000 people. However, in the last six months of the year, the country lost around 179,000 people, leading to an overall decline. The main reason for this drop was a large decrease in non-permanent residents, especially people who had study permits or work permits.

The report said that about 171,000 fewer non-permanent residents were in the country during this period. This change had a major impact on the total population numbers. At the same time, the number of permanent residents who arrived in Canada was around 83,000 in the last three months of the year. Although this was a positive number, it was still about 19 percent lower compared to 2024.

Canada also saw fewer births than deaths during this time. Between October 2025 and January 2026, there were 781 more deaths than births, which also added to the population decline.

Officials said that new immigration policies may help improve the situation in the future. For example, the government announced a plan to help Quebec by allowing nearly 33,000 skilled workers with permits to become permanent residents in 2026 and 2027.

Even with these steps, experts believe that population growth may stay lower than the strong increases seen in 2023 and 2024. The report also advised that the current data should be seen carefully, as many people are extending their work and study permits, which could change the numbers in the coming months.
