Doug Armstrong has decided not to return as general manager of the Canada men's national ice hockey team. His decision comes after the team’s recent Olympic campaign, where Canada lost to the United States in the gold-medal match. Armstrong said he had already made up his mind to step down, no matter what the final result was.
Armstrong’s contract ended after the Olympic Games, and he informed Hockey Canada that he wants to focus fully on his role with the St. Louis Blues. He will also step away from his general manager duties at the club after this season, passing the role to Alexander Steen.
Hockey Canada thanked Armstrong for his long service and leadership. During his time, he helped build strong teams and guided Canada through several major tournaments. He was in charge of team selection for events like the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and multiple World Championships in recent years.
The 61-year-old said it is the right time for a change. He explained that the role has been a great experience, but he believes others should now get the chance to lead. Armstrong added that stepping aside is the best decision for both himself and the team’s future.
Armstrong was also expected to lead Canada at the 2022 Olympics, but that plan was cancelled when the NHL did not take part due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, his contribution to Canadian hockey remains significant.
With Armstrong stepping down, Hockey Canada will now look ahead to a new leadership phase as the team prepares for future international competitions.
