Tsutomu Shibayama, the famous director known for his work on Doraemon, has passed away at the age of 84 due to lung cancer. His death was confirmed by Ajia-do Animation Works, also known as Asia-do.
Shibayama died on March 6, 2026. In an official statement, the company shared that he had served as their former President and CEO and thanked fans for their continued support and love during his lifetime.
Tsutomu Shibayama was best known for directing the Doraemon TV series and movies for more than 20 years. His work helped make Doraemon one of the most loved anime shows around the world. The story of Doraemon, a robot cat from the future who helps a young boy named Nobita, became popular among children and families for generations.
Before working on Doraemon, Shibayama also contributed as an animation director on well-known shows like Dokonjo Gaeru and Ganso Tensai Bakabon. Over the years, he played an important role in many other famous series, including Nintama Rantaro and Chibi Maruko-chan.
The animation studio said that his funeral was held privately with close family members, as per the wishes of his family. They also requested people not to send flowers or gifts. A memorial service may be held later to honor his life and work.
