Sanders Secures Another Start After Browns' 24-10 Win

Shedeur Sanders has made a remarkable impact in his early NFL journey with the Cleveland Browns. The rookie quarterback etched his name in history, becoming the first Browns rookie in three decades to win his inaugural NFL start. He is set to lead the team once more this week, as Coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Sanders will start again following an encouraging 24-10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Stefanski lauded Sanders for maintaining composure under duress, highlighting the essential duty of a quarterback—winning. He noted that young quarterbacks develop over time, and Sanders is already exhibiting signs of substantial growth. Following a challenging debut against the Baltimore Ravens, Sanders returned with enhanced control and confidence, completing 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards, including one touchdown and one interception. This performance marked one of the few instances this season where a Browns quarterback surpassed the 200-yard passing milestone, underscoring the team’s offensive progress.

Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees devised a game strategy that allowed Sanders to settle in effectively. Many plays centered around short passes, with thirteen attempts traveling less than 10 yards. However, the Browns weren’t hesitant to take risks when opportunities arose. Sanders connected on two deep passes totaling 91 yards, including a standout 52-yard throw to Isaiah Bond in the first quarter. Despite pressure, Sanders delivered the ball with precision, showcasing his developing prowess, especially with a 66-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Sampson on a screen play—two of the season's longest passing efforts.

Encouragingly, Sanders demonstrated his ability to remain composed under pressure. Earlier in the season and during preseason, he struggled with avoiding sacks. Yet against the Raiders, he effectively utilized his mobility, enduring only one sack throughout the game amid eight pressured situations. Stefanski commented on the team’s satisfaction with how Sanders managed the game’s pace and orchestrated the offense. While there are areas needing improvement, the coaching staff believes Sanders possesses the right mentality to advance further.

On the defensive side, the Browns continue to impress. Their pass rush was exceptional, recording ten sacks against Las Vegas quarterback Geno Smith—the second-highest total in franchise history. Defensive standout Myles Garrett contributed three sacks, reinforcing his record with 18 sacks, the most achieved by any player over the first 11 games since the NFL began officially tracking sacks in 1982. He also set a league record with 14 sacks in his last five games.

However, not everything was positive for Cleveland. Their third-down conversion rates remain unsatisfactory. Following a 2-for-14 showing against the Ravens, they managed only 3-for-12 against the Raiders. Running back Jerome Ford faced difficulties, often gaining negative yards and seeing limited action in the offense. Injuries also pose a concern, with DT Adin Huntington and TE Brenden Bates expected to be sidelined for an extended period.

Despite these challenges, the Browns concluded a 13-game road losing streak, finally securing a victory away from home. With a 2-3 record at home, they are gearing up for their next matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, against whom they have historically excelled, winning eight of the last ten encounters.
