Stan Wawrinka, the esteemed Swiss tennis player at 40, has announced that the 2026 season will mark his exit from professional tennis. One of his career pinnacles came in 2014 at the Australian Open, where he delivered a stunning performance, defeating Rafael Nadal in the final following a thrilling five-set battle against Djokovic in the semifinals. Fans can anticipate Wawrinka's match against Serbia’s Laslo Djere in the opening round of the Australian Open, his 20th singles appearance in Melbourne. Currently sitting at 139th in the rankings, he has secured a wildcard entry into the tournament.
On reflecting about his retirement decision, Wawrinka shared that thoughts about concluding his career arose towards the end of the last year. He stated, “End of last year, between October and December, I had things in my mind. I wanted to keep going, and I was happy playing. I still am. It was quite clear that next year should be my last year. It was an easy decision, and I’m at peace with it.”
Despite facing age-related challenges and multiple knee surgeries, Wawrinka has remained a formidable competitor. He has engaged in nearly 30 matches on the ATP Challenger Tour, taking breaks as needed when his ranking dipped beyond the top 150.
He kicked off the current season positively, aiding Switzerland's advance to the final in the United Cup, largely due to teammate Belinda Bencic’s exceptional performance.
“I’m looking forward to this year,” Wawrinka commented. “One year of tennis is a lot, but I’m happy to give it my all and remain competitive as long as my body allows.”
