Penang Temple Calls Off Aidilfitri Gathering

In Penang, a temple has officially announced the cancellation of its Aidilfitri open house, refuting any rumors regarding a replacement “unity banquet.” This clarification comes after local authorities hinted at a possible alternative event, resulting in some confusion.

Thean Hock Keong unequivocally stated that there will be no event on April 11, stressing that all associated activities have been entirely axed. The temple pointed out that reports suggesting another group would take the reins as the organizer were incorrect.

Moreover, the temple clarified its non-involvement with any unrelated gathering purportedly set for Dewan Panorama in Bagan Ajam, asserting that such claims have contributed to unnecessary public confusion.

The situation escalated when Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Mohamad Abdul Hamid indicated that a “Majlis Jamuan Perpaduan,” or unity banquet, might go ahead under a different organizer. The temple promptly rejected this assertion, reaffirming that it will not partake in any associated event.

The cancellation is in alignment with directives from the Penang Islamic Religious Affairs Department, which prohibited the temple from hosting the Aidilfitri open house, citing that such celebrations fall within Islamic religious practices that necessitate approval from the relevant authorities.

In light of this, the temple expressed its commitment to comply with the directive in order to mitigate misunderstandings and sensitivities. Initially, its intent was to foster unity and strengthen communal ties, complete with halal cuisine prepared by local vendors.

While expressing regret over the situation, the temple urged officials and notable figures to refrain from making conflicting or ambiguous statements, emphasizing that clear communication is vital to dispense confusion and reiterating its aim of promoting community harmony.
