Regina-area filmmaker Emma Zuck has created a new initiative called the Homegrown Cinema Club to bring Saskatchewan’s storytellers to the big screen and celebrate the province’s creative film community.
Zuck’s passion for filmmaking began at a young age with a camcorder and grew through her film school experiences in Toronto. After returning to Saskatoon, she noticed a lack of venues for Prairie-made short films, inspiring her to build a space where local talent could be shared and appreciated by real audiences.
Homegrown Cinema Club’s screenings allow emerging filmmakers to showcase their short films to a crowd, fostering community pride while also raising money for local charities. Although still in its early stages, the project has already seen enthusiastic turnout and support from people who might not normally attend local film events.
Zuck says the excitement and gratitude expressed by attendees — some of whom had never attended short film screenings before — highlights the appetite for authentic, locally produced storytelling in Saskatchewan.
