In a gripping ODI in Ranchi, cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma captivated fans with a magnificent partnership of 136 runs for the second wicket. The duo propelled India to a formidable score of 349-8, clinching a hard-fought 17-run victory over South Africa in their opening match.

Post-match, captain KL Rahul expressed his excitement, stating, "Watching them play freely and apply pressure on the opposition is always a spectacle. Their class shines through."

Batting first after losing the toss for the 19th consecutive ODI, India faced an early setback when Yashasvi Jaiswal fell cheaply for 18 runs. This brought Kohli to the crease, while Rohit survived a dropped catch in the same over, allowing the seasoned pair to establish a game-changing partnership. Rohit reached his half-century in just 43 balls, hitting two sixes in a row off spin bowler Prenelan Subrayen, before being dismissed lbw by Marco Jansen.

India faced pressure at 200-4 but steady contributions from KL Rahul with 60 runs, alongside Kohli's explosive innings of 135 runs off 120 balls—boasting seven sixes and 11 fours—helped the team achieve a commanding total. Ravindra Jadeja also chipped in with a brisk 32 off 20 balls.

South Africa’s chase stumbled early, losing key wickets including Ryan Rickelton, Quinton de Kock, and Aiden Markram. However, Matthew Breetzke (72) and Marco Jansen (70) tried to recover the momentum, steering South Africa to 227-5. Kuldeep Yadav’s four-wicket haul, which included both Breetzke and Jansen, swung the game back in India’s favor.

Corbin Bosch fought valiantly for South Africa, scoring 67 off 51 balls, with support from Nandre Burger, but ultimately, India’s bowlers held strong to restrict the innings to 332 runs, securing a 17-run triumph.

The teams will meet again for the second ODI in Raipur on Wednesday, promising another thrilling clash.
