In Mozambique, a devastating flooding crisis has taken an alarming turn as crocodiles escape rising waters, encroaching on urban areas. Reports indicate that these reptiles are threatening the safety of residents as they inhabit streets, homes, and emergency shelters. Tragically, crocodile attacks have claimed at least three lives amid the catastrophic floods.
Xai-Xai, the capital of Gaza province, is among the regions most affected, as floodwaters engulf neighborhoods, compelling thousands to evacuate to safer terrain. Authorities have issued urgent warnings for locals to steer clear of still waters, where crocodiles may lurk.
Recent heavy rains across southern Africa have led to overflowing rivers. The Limpopo River has seen significant surges, enabling crocodiles from the river to infiltrate submerged towns.
Officials have verified that three out of thirteen flood fatalities in Mozambique are reaffirmed to be due to crocodile attacks. In one incident in Gaza province earlier this month, two individuals lost their lives, and a further three were injured. In Maputo province, a man was allegedly taken by a crocodile in Moamba.
It’s believed that floodwaters, possibly from a connected wildlife sanctuary in South Africa, may have displaced crocodiles into populated zones. Local leaders are advising residents to maintain distance from water bodies, flooded areas, or riverbanks, where crocodiles can move stealthily through interconnected waterways.
Besides the wildlife threat, the floods have resulted in a dire humanitarian situation. Over 700,000 individuals are facing challenges throughout Mozambique, with children constituting a significant portion of those affected. The disaster has led to the destruction of countless homes, roads, bridges, and agricultural lands.
The health conditions are deteriorating rapidly as well. Numerous health facilities in Gaza and Maputo provinces have been compromised, leaving tens of thousands without essential medical care. Displaced families residing in temporary shelters are experiencing a severe lack of medical support.
Health officials have raised concerns regarding individuals in need of regular medications due to disrupted supply chains. There’s also an impending risk of disease outbreaks, such as cholera, as safe drinking water becomes scarce and sanitation infrastructure falters.
Across Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, the floods and consequent rains have resulted in over a hundred fatalities. Agricultural devastation raises alarms about food shortages and hunger for numerous small-scale farmers.
As waters begin to recede in select regions, the threats remain significant. Authorities and humanitarian agencies emphasize the urgency for assistance to restore health services, secure safe shelter, and protect communities from further tragedies in this ongoing disaster.
