In Sydney River, Cape Breton, police discovered a body in the river on the evening of Friday, June 27. Officers were called to the area around Rose Street after someone reported finding a deceased person in the water.

What Happened

  • Officers from the Cape Breton Regional Police responded quickly to the call and located the body in the river.

  • The area around Rose Street was closed off so investigators could work and collect clues about what happened.

What Police Are Doing

  • The police are looking at all possible explanations, including accident, foul play, or natural causes.

  • Forensic experts and the medical examiner have been asked to identify the person and determine the cause of death.

  • Investigators have asked anyone who was near the river or has security footage taken between Thursday night and Friday evening to come forward with information.

Investigation Background

  • Earlier this year, in late May, Cape Breton police also found possible human remains near Morley Road, later confirmed to belong to Justin MacDonald.

  • Because both incidents involve bodies near Sydney, police are being especially careful to find any connection. But no link has been confirmed so far.

Next Steps

  • The identification process may take time; families will be contacted once positive identification is made.

  • The police continue to gather evidence and ask the public to share any relevant video or photos.
