Canada's farmers are facing new challenges like hotter summers, drier soil, stronger storms, and pest problems. To keep their farms healthy and growing food, they are learning and using smart ways to adapt.

  1. Water Smart Farming

    • In Alberta, some farmers use soil sensors and new sprinklers to water plants more carefully, saving up to 40% water while still growing well.

    • They also built ponds to collect rain and snow, so crops have water during dry times.

  2. Keeping Soil Healthy

    • Farmers are planting cover crops and changing how they plow to keep soil full of nutrients and moisture.

    • In the Red Deer valley, one farm’s soil became sponge-like and held more water, even during drought .

  3. Planting at the Right Time

    • In the Prairies, farmers started planting earlier so crops avoid the hottest part of summer.

    • Many use drought-resistant seeds, and traps or shelters to protect snow and water from fading away .

  4. Using New Technology and Cleanup Help

    • Grain farmers in Saskatchewan used crop insurance and new seeds and tech to stay strong even when weather got tough.

    • Government funding supports science projects and research to help farms work better .

  5. Managing Risks Together

    • In Alberta, 25 farms teamed up to share weather and water data. This group effort saved water and helped them all grow.

    • Sharing ideas helps too—switching to smart farm methods, working with neighbors or extension offices, gives more strength and knowledge to farms.
