Yann LeCun, often celebrated as a pioneer in modern artificial intelligence, has revealed his exit from Meta after a remarkable 12 years. At 65, LeCun intends to concentrate on his new independent startup which aspires to usher in the next significant advancement in AI.
His departure signifies a notable transition for Meta, where he held positions as the founding director of Facebook AI Research (FAIR) and chief AI scientist over the years. His influence was critical in establishing Meta at the cutting edge of foundational AI research.
In a comprehensive announcement on Facebook and LinkedIn, LeCun detailed that his upcoming startup will build upon the Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI) research initiative, which he has enacted with FAIR, NYU, and global collaborators. The ambitious aim is to craft AI systems that can comprehend the tangible world, retain long-term memories, solve complex scenarios, and orchestrate multi-step actions.
LeCun will continue his collaboration with Meta, as the company will serve as a strategic partner for his new endeavor. This partnership ensures that any breakthrough innovations from his workshop can bolster Meta's ongoing AI pursuits, allowing for both foundational research and alignment with Meta's business objectives.
His exit coincides with significant restructuring within Meta. Recently, CEO Mark Zuckerberg allocated $14.5 billion to Scale AI, appointing its CEO, Alexandr Wang, as Meta's new chief AI officer. This organizational shift, coupled with lukewarm feedback on Meta’s Llama 4 model, indicates a move toward rapid commercialization and a more singular focus on product-oriented AI development, differing from LeCun's exploratory research philosophy.
Freed from corporate restrictions, LeCun is set to guide his startup according to his aspirations, seeking to transform the interaction between AI and both the physical and cognitive realms. While this departure is substantial for Meta, the continued collaboration guarantees that the company remains connected to one of AI’s most prominent figures.
