Max Verstappen reignited the title fight with a commanding victory that reduced Lando Norris’ championship advantage to just 12 points ahead of next weekend’s season finale in Abu Dhabi.
The Red Bull driver crossed the line in 1:24:38.241, finishing nearly eight seconds clear of Oscar Piastri, while Carlos Sainz secured third for Williams. Norris could manage only fourth after struggling to recover from an early strategic setback.
A Turn 1 collision between Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly triggered a slowdown on lap seven, prompting nearly the entire field to pit early. Only Piastri and Norris stayed out, leaving the McLaren pair needing two stops instead of one once racing resumed on lap ten.
Verstappen made an electric launch, overtaking Norris into Turn 1 and keeping close to Piastri before the incident. Piastri recovered well to claim second, while Norris managed to overtake Kimi Antonelli late in the race to limit the damage with an important two points. George Russell finished sixth for Mercedes.
“It’s all possible now,” Verstappen said. “We’ll see. I don’t worry too much.”
Piastri, now 16 points behind Norris, admitted the team would rethink its strategy. “I tried my best but it wasn’t to be tonight,” he said. “In hindsight it’s pretty clear what we would have done differently.”
Norris remains in control of his title hopes and needs only a top-three finish in Abu Dhabi to clinch his first championship.
“It wasn’t our best day,” Norris said. “But I’ve had strong results to get here. I’ll take it on the chin and see what we can do next weekend.”
