In the thrilling third Ashes Test at Adelaide, Usman Khawaja marked his return with an impressive 82 runs off 126 balls against England. Demonstrating remarkable patience, he played a pivotal role in recovering Australia’s innings after a challenging start.

The Australian batting lineup faced difficulties soon after lunch. Fast bowler Jofra Archer swiftly took down Marnus Labuschagne (19) and Cameron Green (0), pushing the score down to 94/4 and adding pressure on the subsequent batsmen.

Khawaja partnered with wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who remained not out on 48, forming a crucial 91-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Their collaboration not only steadied Australia’s innings but also sparked optimism for a competitive first innings total.

Khawaja’s pursuit of a century ended when Will Jacks struck him out with a slog-sweep shot. Even though he missed the milestone, his performance was lauded for its poise and timing.

Earlier, Khawaja had assisted in a valuable 61-run partnership for the third wicket alongside Labuschagne, which greatly aided Australia’s recovery from a precarious 94/2 at lunchtime on day one.

Winning the toss, Australian captain Pat Cummins opted to bat first, a decision that proved wise as the flat pitch allowed for steady runs, primarily benefiting from England’s mistakes.

The Australian team faced a significant challenge before the match with the news that star player Steve Smith was sidelined due to illness. Khawaja stepped in and justified his selection with his confident display. Moving forward, the team aims to capitalize on this solid start to establish a formidable total against England.
