The United States has initiated significant airstrikes aimed at Islamic State (ISIS) locations in Syria. This operation comes as a direct response to an attack that claimed the lives of American personnel earlier this month.
Sources from the US military report that the airstrikes targeted over 70 ISIS sites throughout central Syria, including fighters, ammunition depots, and strategic facilities linked to the group's offensive plans. This mission, dubbed Operation Hawkeye Strike, emphasizes the seriousness of the US response.
The military action followed a violent incident in the ancient city of Palmyra on December 13, where two US Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter lost their lives when their convoy was attacked. Three additional US soldiers sustained injuries, and the assailant was later neutralized by security forces.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized the nature of this military action as a reaction to the tragic loss of American lives, aiming to convey a strong message to ISIS that any attacks on US forces will prompt a decisive response.
“This was a powerful response,” Hegseth stated. “We specifically targeted ISIS operatives, their weaponry, and the infrastructure supporting their activities.”
Fighter jets and attack helicopters from the US were deployed for this mission, alongside long-range rocket systems. Additionally, Jordanian fighter aircraft participated, showcasing regional teamwork against ISIS.
President Donald Trump expressed confidence in the operation's success, noting it inflicted significant damage on ISIS's operational capacity. He remarked at a recent rally that the US has dealt a formidable blow to the militants responsible for the coalition attack.
Trump also highlighted that the Syrian government was supportive of the US actions against ISIS, reinforcing that these airstrikes were intended to safeguard American personnel and avert future assaults.
The US Central Command asserted that the strikes were meticulously planned to minimize civilian risk, concentrating solely on verified ISIS positions in more isolated locations.
Syria’s foreign ministry reaffirmed its dedication to wiping out ISIS influence and ensuring the group cannot find refuge within its territories. Syrian officials declared their continued collaboration with the US-led coalition in combating terrorism.
According to the Syrian Interior Ministry, the attacker in Palmyra was suspected to have ties to ISIS and potentially received assistance from local security forces. Investigations into this matter are ongoing.
Currently, roughly 1,000 US troops remain stationed in Syria, primarily focused on preventing the resurgence of ISIS after its substantial territorial losses in recent years.
While ISIS no longer holds extensive territory, its capacity for launching attacks through smaller cells persists. US officials have cautioned that the threat remains significant and necessitates vigilant monitoring.
These latest US airstrikes underscore Washington’s resolve to protect its forces while exerting pressure on ISIS. However, authorities admit that the struggle against this extremist group is far from conclusion.
