Palestinian-American Teen Released After Prolonged Detention in Israel

Mohammed Ibrahim, a 16-year-old Palestinian-American, has finally been released after enduring nine months in Israeli detention without charge. At just 15, he was arrested during a trip from Florida to the Israeli-occupied West Bank in February. He has always denied accusations of throwing rocks at Jewish settlers.

Upon his release, Mohammed was rushed to a hospital with reports of being pale, underweight, and grappling with various health complications arising from his time in custody. His uncle, Zeyad Kadur, expressed profound relief, calling the past nine months a "nightmarish ordeal." The family now aims to ensure Mohammed receives the necessary medical attention to regain his health and childhood.

The U.S. State Department has welcomed his release, committing to ongoing consular support for the family, stressing the importance of safeguarding U.S. citizens. Earlier, Mohammed’s father, Zahar Ibrahim, expressed dissatisfaction with what he perceived as insufficient efforts by the U.S. government to secure his son’s freedom. Support for this sentiment came from 27 U.S. lawmakers who urged for stronger measures to facilitate his release.

During his detention, Mohammed spent time in Ofer Prison in the West Bank, a facility that also houses adult inmates charged with severe crimes. Human rights organizations and the United Nations have voiced concerns over the treatment of Palestinian minors in Israeli jails, citing instances of abuse and torture; approximately 350 Palestinian children remain in Israeli custody.

In addition to Mohammed’s case, the family is seeking justice for his cousin, Sayfollah Musallet, a 20-year-old dual U.S. citizen, who reportedly lost his life after being assaulted by Israeli settlers in July. The two had previously worked together at their family-owned ice cream shop in Tampa, Florida. No legal actions have been initiated regarding Sayfollah’s death, and the family anticipates continued protection and support from the U.S. government.

Mohammed Ibrahim’s return brings relief to his family and underscores ongoing issues regarding the detention of Palestinian youths, the treatment of U.S. citizens overseas, and the broader human rights context in the West Bank.
