On Thursday, two US B-52 bombers conducted flights in proximity to Venezuela’s coastline over the Caribbean Sea, showcasing military capability as part of Washington's intensified efforts to combat suspected drug trafficking in the area.
Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 indicated that the bombers navigated alongside Venezuela’s northern shore, made a circuit northeast of Caracas, and subsequently headed back over the sea. This marks the fourth occurrence of US military aircraft operating near Venezuela since mid-October, including B-52 and B-1B bombers in previous instances.
The timing of this latest mission raises alarms in Caracas, where there is apprehension that the US military presence could indicate ulterior political motives. While Washington claims its maneuvers are exclusively intended to disrupt drug trafficking routes, Venezuelan officials accuse the US of utilizing anti-narcotics operations as a cover for regime change efforts.
Recently, the US has significantly bolstered its naval and aerial presence in the region. The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier strike group has made its way to Latin America, complemented by stationed F-35 stealth fighters in Puerto Rico and six Navy ships that are actively patrolling the Caribbean Sea.
Since early September, US forces have engaged in at least 17 operations against vessels suspected of being involved in drug smuggling — impacting 16 boats and one semi-submersible, which reportedly led to the deaths of around 67 individuals, according to official reports. Nevertheless, Washington has not yet provided definitive evidence linking these vessels to narcotics trafficking or indicating an immediate threat.
The persistent deployment of substantial US military resources near Venezuelan waters has exacerbated geopolitical strains. President Nicolás Maduro's government contends that the US is orchestrating attempts to undermine his administration, while US officials maintain that their priority is on counter-narcotics endeavors.
As each new mission unfolds, the conflict between Washington and Caracas intensifies, drawing the Caribbean skies into a threatening arena of escalating power dynamics.
