The United Arab Emirates has officially designated January 1, 2026, as the inaugural public holiday of the year. All public sector employees throughout the seven emirates will have this day off, according to a circular released by the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources.

Additionally, government staff will have the option to work remotely on Friday, January 2. This provides public sector employees a gradual transition back to the office on Monday, January 5, as they welcome the new year.

Private sector workers are currently waiting for updates from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation regarding whether they will also have a remote work opportunity on January 2.

Dubai is gearing up for grand New Year festivities on the night of December 31, complete with fireworks, parties, and concerts. Authorities are expected to release details about public transport arrangements and road closures to assist residents and visitors in their New Year’s plans.

This declaration of New Year's Day marks the first official holiday of 2026, with other significant holidays such as Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha anticipated later in the year. Eid Al Adha is forecasted to offer the longest holiday, featuring a six-day weekend in May, allowing residents ample time to celebrate and gather with family.
