This discussion also included an invitation for Xi to undertake an official visit to the United States later this year, signaling a commitment to strengthen bilateral ties. This call follows their earlier meeting in Busan, South Korea, approximately one month prior.
Major topics during their discussion ranged from international trade dynamics to global issues such as the war in Ukraine, the fentanyl crisis, and the delicate situation surrounding Taiwan. Trump characterized the conversation as positive, reaffirming that the relationship between the two nations is "extremely strong."
China also responded, emphasizing the importance of maintaining momentum in relationships based on equality, respect, and mutual benefit. Beijing acknowledged that ties have been growing more stable and conducive since their last meeting.
In their previous encounter, Trump and Xi reached a temporary truce regarding tariffs. The U.S. decided to ease a 20% tariff aimed at restricting fentanyl influx, while China postponed its new restrictions on rare earth exports. Despite existing tariffs on many Chinese products—hovering around 50%—there are indications both countries are keen to ameliorate trade frictions.
According to the White House, the recent call lasted nearly an hour and was predominantly centered on trade discussions. Officials from both sides expressed optimism regarding the productive nature of the dialogue.
Apart from economic matters, the two leaders touched upon Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and ongoing tensions regarding Taiwan. Xi reiterated Taiwan's eventual return to China is a fundamental aspect of Beijing's long-term global vision, a subject laden with sensitivity especially given rising diplomatic tensions between China and Japan, a staunch U.S. ally.
Japan has cautioned that any aggression towards Taiwan could provoke a military reaction. Nonetheless, Trump chose to focus on trade and collaborative efforts in his public communication regarding the call, avoiding direct mention of Taiwan.
With both nations facing economic hurdles and evolving global alliances, this anticipated visit emerges as a pivotal phase in restoring dialogue.
