President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a series of major events to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary next year, featuring a mix of sports, entertainment, and monuments.
At the center of the celebrations is the “Patriot Games,” a four-day athletic competition that will bring together top high school athletes from every state and territory. Each will send one young man and one young woman to compete in a variety of sporting events. The games are intended to showcase talent, teamwork, and national pride.
“In the fall, we will host the first-ever Patriot Games, a unique four-day event featuring the finest young athletes from across the nation,” Trump said.
Although some critics have drawn parallels to fictional competitions, organizers emphasize that the games are meant to be a friendly contest celebrating youth achievement and sportsmanship.
In addition, Trump announced a UFC fight on the South Lawn of the White House on June 14, Flag Day, featuring world-class fighters. “This will be a one-of-a-kind event hosted by Dana White, and it’s going to be truly special,” the president said.
Trump also shared plans to build a triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., inspired by Paris’ famous Arc de Triomphe. “We are one of the only major capitals without a triumphal arch. We will build a beautiful one in Washington very soon,” he said.
Federal programs are already aligning with these anniversary goals. The Department of Agriculture is supporting the “Great American State Fair,” inviting states to compete for the title of most patriotic. Meanwhile, the Smithsonian Institution is reviewing its exhibits to ensure the semiquincentennial celebrations reflect national pride.
With less than a year remaining, the Patriot Games, UFC fight, and triumphal arch are expected to attract widespread attention, offering Americans a unique way to celebrate 250 years of independence.
