Trump Threatens to Move 2026 World Cup Games from Boston

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, became the center of political controversy after former President Donald Trump issued a veiled threat to move games scheduled in Boston. Trump specifically referenced Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, warning the city must "clean up its act" or risk losing matches.

FIFA responded cautiously, emphasizing the role of local governments in ensuring safety. “Safety and security are the top priorities at all FIFA events worldwide. Safety and security are obviously the governments’ responsibility, and they decide what is in the best interest for public safety,” a FIFA spokesperson said. The organization added that it expects all 16 host cities to be ready to meet necessary requirements.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, responding to the White House’s criticism, expressed confidence in the city’s preparedness. “Much of it is locked down by contract so that no single person, even if they live in the White House currently, can undo it,” Wu said. She characterized Trump’s comments as part of a broader attempt to pressure cities into compliance with his agenda.

The United States is slated to host 78 of the 104 matches in the expanded 48-team tournament, set to take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Trump had previously suggested he could make similar calls regarding other U.S. host cities, including Seattle and San Francisco.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has previously met with Trump, was mentioned by the former president as someone who could relocate matches, although FIFA has not commented on any potential changes to the host cities or stadiums.
