Trump Extends Invitation to Colombia’s Petro Following Recent Criticism

U.S. President Donald Trump has notably softened his stance towards Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro, announcing a forthcoming visit to the White House after a productive phone dialogue.

In a message shared on social media, Trump expressed, “I had the pleasure of chatting with Colombia’s President, Gustavo Petro. He articulated key issues about drugs and our previous disagreements. I valued his call and tone, and I eagerly await our meeting soon.”

This latest development follows Trump's recent criticisms of Petro, where he linked the Colombian leader to cocaine production for U.S. markets. Trump previously called Colombia “very sick” while discussing military actions against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, even suggesting possible U.S. intervention.

During a speech to thousands in Bogotá, Petro revealed that their conversation spanned approximately an hour, centering on Venezuela and drug trafficking.

Petro asserted that some Colombian politicians involved in drug trafficking misinformed Trump, contributing to a “diplomatic” and “verbal” crisis between the two nations.

Surprisingly, Trump's tone shift comes after Petro condemned U.S. operations against Maduro, describing them as a significant breach of Latin American sovereignty.

Historically, Colombia has been a vital ally for the U.S. in Latin America, engaged in joint efforts to combat drug trafficking and insurgent groups. Colombia notably stands as the world’s leading cocaine producer.

Nevertheless, recent months have seen rising tensions. In October, the Trump administration leveled sanctions against Petro and his administration for alleged ties to the drug trade. The U.S. also reduced its support for Colombia, marking the first such move in decades.

Trump’s campaign against drug trafficking initiated with strikes on drug vessels from Venezuela, later extending to those linked to Colombia.

Despite prior allegations and sanctions, Trump’s recent overture indicates a desire to mend ties with Petro and Colombia.
