On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump commented that he perceives Russian President Vladimir Putin's desire to conclude the Ukraine war, although discussions between US and Russian officials ended without reaching an agreement.
Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner, invested significant hours negotiating in the Kremlin. Despite their extensive efforts, no milestone was achieved toward resolving this historic conflict in Europe.
From the Oval Office, Trump described the dialogue with Putin as “very good”, suggesting the US delegation came away with the notion that the Russian president is keen on ending the war. “They came back with a very strong impression he’d like to finalize a deal,” Trump remarked.
Witkoff and Kushner introduced a refreshed US strategy, encouraging Ukraine to relinquish portions of the eastern Donbas region and refrain from joining NATO. While the proposal found some favor in Kyiv, Moscow dismissed certain aspects as untenable. Kremlin representatives emphasized their willingness for diplomatic solutions despite recent successes on the battlefield.
Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov indicated that Russia's recent military achievements in eastern Ukraine impacted these discussions. Russian forces have made gains in that area over the past month, with Putin warning of continued hostilities until Russia's territorial claims are met.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov affirmed that Russia remains open to negotiations, stressing that diplomatic avenues are still viable. Meanwhile, NATO continues to bolster Ukraine's military capabilities, sending substantial arms aid. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte remarked that while peace talks are promising, it is crucial for Ukraine to maintain sufficient strength for its defense.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged a possible opening for peace but underscored that any negotiations must be backed by international pressure on Russia. “The world feels there is now a chance to conclude the war, and negotiation efforts must come with pressure on Russia,” said Zelensky.
These recent dialogues have also sparked concerns in European nations, which worry that the US and Russia might forge agreements without adequately considering Kyiv's stance. European countries are working to modify the US proposal to prevent Ukraine from being coerced into yielding territory.
Despite the diplomacy fraught with uncertainty, Trump maintains a hopeful outlook for a diplomatic resolution, noting that there was a prior opportunity for peace when he engaged in discussions directly with President Zelensky earlier this year.
As the conflict continues, Russian troops are steadily advancing at the front lines, with skirmishes ongoing in strategic areas like Pokrovsk. Analysts highlight that the situation is dynamic, with international diplomatic efforts playing a vital role in determining the direction of the conflict.
