Colombo: Sri Lanka finds itself grappling with a dire weather crisis as relentless floods and landslides ravage numerous districts, resulting in a death toll that has escalated to 56, along with damage to over 600 residences, as reported by officials on Friday.
The nation has been enduring harsh weather since the previous week, but the situation significantly deteriorated on Thursday when persistent heavy rains unleashed floods and landslides across various regions. Residential areas, agricultural lands, and critical roads were inundated, causing extensive disruptions.
The mountainous terrains of Badulla and Nuwara Eliya, recognized for their tea plantations, have experienced some of the worst impacts.
Over 25 fatalities due to landslides have been confirmed in these areas, situated nearly 300 kilometers (186 miles) east of Colombo.
According to the national disaster management authority, 21 individuals remain unaccounted for, with 14 others sustaining injuries from landslides and collapsing slopes in the hillside regions.
Fatalities resulting from landslides have also been noted in other areas of Sri Lanka as rainfall continued to intensify.
In light of deteriorating weather, the government has mandated the closure of all governmental offices and educational institutions on Friday for the safety of the populace.
Officials reported that reservoirs and rivers have overflowed, resulting in the closure of multiple key roadways. Rising water levels have obstructed routes with mudslides, rocks, and trees.
Passenger train services have been suspended in numerous areas due to flooded tracks, mudslides, and debris making travel hazardous. Roads connecting various towns have also been shut down as a result of flooding and landslides.
Local news channels showcased dramatic images of Sri Lanka's armed forces mobilizing to assist stranded residents.
