Thailand Enforces Regulations on Edible Gold Leaf Products

The Thai government has initiated a decisive campaign against the marketing and distribution of “edible gold leaf” after rising concerns about misleading advertisements and associated health risks from online sales. Officials warn that many items touted on social media as “24K edible gold” or “food grade gold” may lack appropriate safety certifications for consumption.

Minister Ms. Supamas Isarabhakdi, attached to the Prime Minister’s Office and overseeing the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB), has instructed her team to urgently scrutinize the surge of edible gold promotions flooding online channels. Special attention is being directed towards products utilized in luxury foods, desserts, and beverages.

Reports indicate that numerous online vendors are falsely marketing decorative metallic foils as safe for consumption without the necessary health approvals. Concerns arise that consumers could inadvertently buy unsafe materials disguised with terms like “pure gold” or “consumable gold.”

In collaboration with Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Consumer Protection Board is set to inspect these products to ascertain compliance with food safety regulations. Authorities are also advocating for major online platforms to eliminate promotions that make misleading or exaggerated claims about edible gold offerings.

Ms. Supamas cautioned that certain products may merely be decorative items, not intended for consumption. She emphasized the potential health risks of long-term consumption of uncertified metallic materials that are not explicitly manufactured for food use.

Consumers are urged to meticulously review product labels prior to purchase. Recommendations include verifying safety for consumption, manufacturer information, and avoiding suspiciously inexpensive items featuring claims of purity without valid certification.

Officials reiterated that online retailers must engage in truthful advertising, providing accurate and clear product details instead of luring consumers with lofty marketing rhetoric. Legal repercussions are anticipated for vendors violating consumer protection statutes.

Thailand’s intervention highlights the escalating global scrutiny regarding online food safety and the proliferation of luxury food products marketed via social media. Ongoing investigations and oversight efforts are projected to persist in the upcoming weeks.
