Pakistan Train Bombing Kills More Than 30 People Official Says

More than 30 people were killed in a deadly suicide bombing targeting a train in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, according to government officials. The attack happened near the city of Quetta and is being described as one of the deadliest recent attacks on Pakistan’s railway system. Authorities said the explosion targeted a shuttle train carrying security personnel and their family members who were traveling before the Eid al-Adha holidays.

According to officials, the attack took place when a vehicle packed with explosives rammed into the moving train near the Chaman Phatak area of Quetta. The powerful blast derailed the engine and several train coaches, while at least two carriages overturned and caught fire after the explosion. Thick black smoke covered the area as rescue teams rushed to the scene to help injured passengers trapped inside the damaged coaches.

Local authorities said dozens of people were also injured, many of them seriously. Hospitals in Quetta declared emergency conditions as doctors and medical staff treated wounded victims brought from the attack site. Officials warned that the death toll could rise further because several injured passengers remain in critical condition. Rescue operations continued for hours after the blast as security teams searched the area for possible additional threats.

The separatist militant group Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the bombing. The group described the attack as a suicide operation and said the train was carrying Pakistani military personnel. Pakistani authorities have not officially confirmed all details of the claim but acknowledged that security personnel were among the victims.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the bombing and called it a “cowardly terrorist attack.” In an official statement, he expressed condolences to the families of those killed and promised strict action against the people responsible. Pakistan’s military and security agencies also vowed to continue operations against militant groups active in Balochistan and other sensitive regions.

Balochistan has faced insurgency and militant violence for many years. Separatist groups in the province accuse the government of unfairly controlling the region’s natural resources without giving enough benefits to local communities. The province is strategically important because it borders both Iran and Afghanistan and contains major Chinese-backed infrastructure projects, including the Gwadar port under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Security experts say attacks in Balochistan have increased in recent months, especially against trains, military personnel, infrastructure projects, and Chinese interests in the region. Earlier this year, militants also carried out coordinated assaults in different parts of the province, leading to heavy clashes with Pakistani security forces.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and destruction after the bombing. Videos shared online showed damaged train coaches, emergency sirens, burning debris, and rescue workers carrying injured passengers away from the wreckage. Nearby buildings and vehicles were also reportedly damaged due to the force of the explosion.

International reactions also began emerging after the attack. Several countries and organizations condemned the bombing and expressed support for Pakistan in its fight against terrorism. Security analysts warned that the latest attack highlights the continuing instability in Balochistan and the growing challenge faced by Pakistani authorities in controlling militant violence in the region.
