5.5 Magnitude Quake Strikes Gansu, Prompting Evacuations

Beijing: On Monday, Tebo County in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu Province, northwest China, experienced a 5.5 magnitude earthquake, as reported by the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC).

The quake resulted in the safe evacuation of more than 20,000 residents to secure areas, with local officials confirming no reported casualties.

In the aftermath, public safety authorities deployed 350 police officers to aid in search and rescue, while 340 personnel from the Gansu provincial fire and rescue corps, along with 65 vehicles and seven trained search dogs, were sent to offer immediate assistance in affected areas.

Although minor structural damages were noted in some buildings, swift response efforts prevented any serious injuries. Relief teams are actively monitoring aftershocks and providing assistance throughout the region.

The local administration has advised residents to remain alert and adhere to safety protocols issued by emergency services, including assessments and reinforcements of vulnerable structures.

This incident is part of a series of recent tremors in northwest China, underscoring the critical need for preparedness and rapid response in seismic areas. Authorities are continuing to evaluate the situation and ensure public safety in the aftermath of the earthquake.
