In a disturbing manifestation of vengeance, the Taliban orchestrated a public execution in eastern Afghanistan, compelling a 13-year-old boy to shoot a convicted killer responsible for the deaths of over a dozen family members. This event unfolded last week in a crowded sports stadium in Khost province, with approximately 80,000 attendees, as reported.
The individual convicted, known as Mangal, was found guilty alongside two others for the brutal killings of 13 of the boy's relatives, including women and children. The Taliban’s Supreme Court indicated that the execution was carried out under Qisas, a form of Sharia law akin to an eye for an eye. Authorities revealed that Mangal’s fate could have been altered had the victim’s family chosen forgiveness, but they opted for the death penalty.
The Supreme Court confirmed through social media that the execution occurred in the stadium following the family's decision against clemency. Although attendees were reportedly prohibited from bringing mobile devices, footage from outside depicted thousands of men who gathered to observe the act.
This incident represents at least the 11th instance of public punishment since the Taliban regained control in 2021, reinstating rigorous Sharia penalties. Offenses like murder, theft, and adultery have led to executions, amputations, and public floggings under their interpretation of Islamic law.
Under Taliban governance, severe restrictions on women and girls have been imposed, eliciting widespread international backlash. Female students are denied access to secondary education and universities, and professional avenues for women have largely vanished, exacerbating the human rights crisis in the country.
The execution held in Khost has received global condemnation, with the United Nations labeling the act as "inhumane and cruel," emphasizing the dire consequences of Taliban rule on Afghan society.
