India’s T20 Shuffle Backfires as Suryakumar Walks In at No.4

India’s bold decision to send captain Suryakumar Yadav at No.4 instead of his usual one-down spot backfired during their 51-run defeat to South Africa in New Chandigarh. The move drew sharp criticism from cricket legends Dale Steyn and Robin Uthappa, who warned head coach Gautam Gambhir against risky experiments ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Chasing a daunting 214, India lost vice-captain Shubman Gill for a golden duck in the very first over. With early pressure mounting, Suryakumar was expected to step in at No.3. Instead, Axar Patel was promoted, managing just 21 runs off 21 balls. Suryakumar, struggling for form in T20s, came in at No.4 and departed after scoring 5 off 4 deliveries.

Uthappa expressed frustration on JioHotstar, questioning India’s flexible batting positions and urging the team to stabilize the top order. “Your top three must be fixed, whether setting a total or chasing one. Flexibility is fine later, but not at the start when the foundation must be built,” he said.

Steyn added, “India essentially threw Axar to the wolves. Your best batters should come in during crunch situations, not experiments. This overcomplicates a simple chase and cost the team dearly tonight.”

Both cricketing greats emphasized that constant shuffling disrupts role clarity and could hurt India in high-stakes tournaments. They urged Gambhir to fix the top three and maintain stability, especially with the T20 World Cup around the corner.
