The Assam Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) has officially filed a chargesheet in a Guwahati court regarding the death of esteemed singer Zubeen Garg. The 52-year-old singer tragically died on September 19 while swimming during a yacht excursion in Singapore, where he had gone to participate in the North East India Festival.
Following over 60 reported cases throughout Assam, the government, led by Himanta Biswa Sarma, established an SIT and appointed a one-person inquiry led by Justice Soumitra Saikia from the Gauhati High Court. The inquiry led to multiple arrests, including that of Shyamkanu Mahanta, the festival organizer, Garg's manager Siddharth Sharma, two members of his band, and Sandipan Garg, a senior police officer in Assam and the singer's cousin.
Additionally, two personal security officers of Garg were apprehended after investigators uncovered financial transactions surpassing Rs 1.1 crore in their accounts. Initially investigated under criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide, the case has now been expanded to include murder charges under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
With approximately 300 witnesses interrogated, the SIT even traveled to Singapore as part of their inquiry. Recently, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared that Zubeen Garg's demise was definitively a murder, asserting that one individual executed the act while others had assisted. He assured that a robust chargesheet would expose motives that would astonish the people of Assam.
Simultaneously, the Singapore Police are conducting an independent investigation into the matter. The case remains a focal point of public attention as fans and locals eagerly await further details surrounding the circumstances of the singer's death.
