Serena Williams has firmly denied speculation about a potential return to professional tennis after her name unexpectedly appeared in the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s (ITIA) anti-doping testing pool. Williams, who last competed at the 2022 US Open, has been away from the sport for more than two years.
Under ITIA rules, any athlete listed in the testing pool must submit daily whereabouts information and remain available for random testing. The listing sparked immediate attention online, with many fans interpreting it as a sign that the 44-year-old icon might be considering a comeback.
However, Williams quickly addressed the rumours and dismissed the speculation. Posting on X, she wrote:
“Omg yall I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.”
Questions remain about why her name is back in the testing pool, though her representatives have yet to offer any explanation. According to ITIA policy, any retired player who wishes to compete again must undergo at least six months of out-of-competition testing before being eligible to enter sanctioned tournaments.
The buzz around her possible return grew last week after Williams shared photos of herself on a tennis court with her younger daughter, Adira River, who was born in August 2023. The images fueled excitement within the tennis community, many of whom still hope to see the champion compete again.
Serena Williams officially stepped away from tennis in 2022, saying she was "evolving away from the sport" to focus on family and new ventures. With 23 Grand Slam singles titles, she remains the most decorated women’s player of the Open Era. She spent years chasing a historic 24th major that would have tied Margaret Court’s all-time record. After giving birth to her first daughter, Olympia, in 2017, she reached four Grand Slam finals but narrowly missed adding another trophy to her legendary career.
Despite ongoing fan hopes, Williams has made it clear that a return is not in her plans — putting an end to the latest wave of comeback rumours.
