Tragic Floods in Bolivia Claim 20 Lives Amid Santa Cruz Deluge

Bolivia is grappling with a devastating natural disaster as relentless rains have triggered severe flooding in Santa Cruz. Authorities report that at least 20 lives have been lost, while over 20 individuals remain unaccounted for. This disaster followed consecutive days of heavy rainfall, leading to overflowing rivers that ravaged homes, roads, and entire communities. Rescue and search operations are currently underway.

Deputy Minister of Civil Defense, Alfredo Troche, indicated that the initial reports reflected seven fatalities, but the figure has risen as floodwaters recede and rescue teams reach more affected areas. He cautioned that the death toll could increase as missing persons are located and access improves. Following the extensive destruction, Santa Cruz has been officially designated a disaster zone.

The flooding crisis began late Friday. Continuous rainfall caused the Pirai River and adjacent waterways to overflow their banks. At least 22 communities have been impacted, with the El Torno municipality being particularly hard-hit. Many inhabitants were taken by surprise as water surges left them with little time to evacuate, resulting in entire neighborhoods being submerged.

Officials have said that many families urgently needed evacuation to safer areas, with around 600 families affected in El Torno alone. In the Colpa Belgica region, close to 1,500 families endured damage to their homes and farmland due to the severe flooding. A significant bridge collapse in the area disrupted a vital road connection to Warnes, exacerbating the crisis.

Rescue teams, emergency responders, and local authorities are tirelessly searching for missing individuals, while also providing food, medical assistance, and shelter to those displaced. Troche emphasized that carrying out rescue operations is complicated due to infrastructure damage and unpredictable weather conditions, yet teams are committed to reaching isolated communities.

As further rain is predicted in the upcoming days, the Bolivian government has mandated the emergency relocation of residents in high-risk areas. Authorities are also considering a declaration of national emergency to expedite aid, mobilize resources, and facilitate long-term support for affected families in response to this escalating crisis.
