In a stunning performance, Aryna Sabalenka claimed her third consecutive victory at the WTA Finals by defeating Coco Gauff with scores of 7-6(5), 6-2, thereby eliminating the former champion. This victory not only secures Sabalenka’s progression to the semifinals, but also sees Jessica Pegula join her after she triumphed over Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-3, concluding with a 2-1 record. Gauff finishes the group stage with a 1-2 record, while Paolini remains winless at 0-3.
Looking ahead to Friday’s semifinals, Sabalenka is set to face Amanda Anisimova in a rematch of their recent U.S. Open final, while Pegula will compete against Elena Rybakina.
During the match, Gauff initially surged ahead, holding two break points to lead 5-2 and even served for the opening set at 5-4. However, Sabalenka fought back, taking the tiebreaker and carrying that momentum into the second set.
Sabalenka remarked, “I was already working for the second set; that break gave me a lot of confidence.”
Meanwhile, Gauff expressed regret over missed chances, stating, “I had a lot of chances in the first set. She stepped her level up and I just couldn't find it after that.”
