Rivian Recalls 34,824 Electric Vehicles Due to Seat Belt Concerns

Rivian Automotive is recalling 34,824 electric vehicles in the United States after identifying a critical defect in the driver’s seat belt system. This defect entails a compromised pretension cable that might not secure the driver adequately during a collision, heightening the risk of injuries.

The recall encompasses specific 2022–2025 EDV models, as confirmed by Rivian in conjunction with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). To rectify the issue, the company is implementing a dual approach. First, an over-the-air software update has been initiated to bolster safety protocols among the affected vehicles. Secondly, it may be necessary for drivers to have their seat belt pretension assemblies physically examined and replaced if defects are detected.

NHTSA has stressed that while no injuries have been tied to this defect, the potential for seat belt malfunction during an accident necessitated the immediate recall. Owners of these vehicles are urged to promptly download the software update and arrange for any required inspections with Rivian service facilities.
