While running is a favored fitness choice, health experts caution against outdoor exercise in highly polluted urban areas. Dr Ramkishan Nag, a surgical oncology consultant at HCG Cancer Centre in Borivali, underscores that early morning runs during winter can expose lungs to harmful toxins.
Dr. Nag explains that smog, vehicle emissions, and stagnant cold air combined create a toxic environment in the early mornings. “Air Quality Index (AQI) levels from 200 to 400 are alarmingly frequent across several Indian cities. Even a half-hour jog can expose the lungs to toxic levels equivalent to smoking numerous cigarettes,” he shared.
Engaging in aerobic activities like jogging elevates the body’s oxygen needs. This fast-paced breathing brings in higher levels of particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, and other pollutants into the lungs. Dr. Nag elaborates that such exposure leads to inflammation and diminished lung capacity, potentially aggravating chronic issues like asthma and bronchitis. Prolonged exposure may elevate risks of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart conditions.
To ensure safety, runners should modify their exercise routines according to air quality. When AQI readings exceed 200, strenuous outdoor activities should be avoided. Alternatives such as treadmill workouts, gym sessions, or exercising at home are recommended. If outdoor running is unavoidable, utilizing a certified N95 mask, steering clear of congested streets, and selecting greener locations with better air circulation can lessen exposure levels.
Embracing technology can also aid in maintaining safety. Real-time AQI tracking applications empower runners to schedule workouts at safer times. Dr. Nag suggests that pollution levels are typically lower in late mornings and early evenings, making these times more favorable for outdoor activities.
Dr. Nag emphasizes the importance of long-term solutions like enhancing green spaces, improving public transport, and enforcing stricter emission standards. He concludes, “Running is a fantastic way to stay fit, but it must enhance lung health, not compromise it. With informed choices, fitness lovers can protect their health amidst urban pollution.”
