PTI Urges Immediate Access to Imran Khan Amid Health Concerns

The political climate in Pakistan is increasingly tense as worries mount over the health of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is demanding an immediate meeting with him after over three weeks without communication. Reports indicate that neither his family nor legal representatives have been permitted to see him since November 4, heightening fears regarding his health and safety.

Imran Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023, serving a lengthy 14-year sentence for corruption. He maintains that the cases against him are fabricated attempts to eliminate him from the political arena, accusing the military of orchestrating this effort. Although the army strongly refutes these claims, Khan’s prolonged seclusion has provoked public unease and escalating political disputes nationwide.

PTI spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari expressed his concerns to Reuters, stating that the situation is “deeply worrying.” He noted the government has provided no justification for obstructing visits, despite prison regulations allowing Khan one external meeting weekly. Furthermore, Bukhari mentioned when it comes to accessing adequate medical care, Khan is being denied proper treatment, amplifying PTI’s anxieties regarding his condition while incarcerated.

This situation has sparked significant protests, with Khan’s relatives and supporters gathering outside the Rawalpindi jail, demanding visitation rights. PTI has also pledged to continue organizing additional protests until these access issues are resolved. Local media reports suggest that the 73-year-old former cricket icon may be transferred to a high-security facility, complicating his family's and legal team's ability to visit him further. However, an anonymous jail official communicated to Reuters that Khan is reportedly in “good health” with no confirmed transfer plans in place, raising questions about the authenticity of the government’s silence.

Khan’s political narrative has been marked by significant upheavals. He rose to the premiership in 2018 with substantial public support, but tensions with military authorities precipitated his ousting in 2022 through parliamentary action. His arrest in May 2023 ignited widespread protests, often devolving into violence, prompting the government to intensify its crackdown on PTI members.

Notwithstanding these hurdles, PTI demonstrated strong performance in the 2024 national elections, emerging as the single-largest party by popular vote. However, claims of extensive electoral manipulation precluded them from acquiring sufficient seats to establish a government. A coalition led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif subsequently assumed power, with Sharif and associates denying all allegations of interference.

The prevailing situation imposes fresh pressure on the government to elucidate why a former prime minister is held under such stringent conditions. At present, PTI leaders are adamant in their demands for immediate access to Imran Khan and appropriate medical evaluations.
